STEM School of the Month - Jun '19
Congratulations to Gowanbank Primary & LCR who are STEM School of the Month for June! Gowanbank have been hard at work this month providing STEM activities both in the classroom and at after school clubs.
In class 2 pupils have been working through a life cycles biology topic. The class have kept caterpillars to watch and monitor as they grow, eventually becoming butterflies. Pupils also read ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ and created artwork about the food that caterpillars eat.
This term P3/4 were designing their own chocolate shop. Pupils built craft models of their shop designs and then used TinkerCAD to create a digital version which they 3D printed. The class then carried out surveys about the type of chocolate they should sell and collated this information using Excel. Finally the class invited other pupils to see their work, give feedback and taste some chocolate.
Gowanbank have also been using STEM as a context for inclusion this year. One of the most successful initiatives has been the schools LEGO therapy club. Pupils come together once a week to design, build and socialise. Gowanbank have found that his has been a great way to encourage communication and group work.
Gowanbank’s very own Miss Campbell also attended the STEM Teachmeet this month and presented to teachers and staff across the West Partnership about the fantastic STEM opportunities that Gowanbank have been providing for pupils this year.
